This is a very personal piece for me. It contains a lot of symbolism and collaged pieces from my BHRT Rx products.
The hormonal journey has been a tough one for me. Bleeding controlled so much of my life from age 11, birth control pills, and then through infertility, the absence of blood, the sad surprise of blood, the relentless work to balance my hormones in the Change of Life. It’s exhausting. But, I’m still here on this earth to experience the struggle, and that’s a gift.
I’m grateful to have the privilege of growing older.

Whatever you call it, there’s just something about that water lapping and waves crashing where the sand meets the H2O.
It’s Timeless and heals a thousand wounds.

If you love deep texture, you will love exploring the hills and valleys of this one. This was piece was first created by building up texture with molding paste and various found objects. The soft colors and nooks and crannies capture the moving light throughout the day in various ways.

One of my favorite childhood memories is swinging on my grandparents’ porch swing on a beautiful Summer day while eating a slice of Neapolitan ice cream sandwiched between 2 warm, crunch waffles.

This piece started by inviting the artists I was working alongside to join me in mark-making on the blank canvas by signing their names in marker on the canvas. One by one each person joined in the collective experience and we laughed and talked about how fun it is to create and try new things.
I next added layers of glazes and used various tools to create textures and apply paint.
Take a close look and you can see our signatures peeking through.

This piece has some texture on the surface and the flowers are highly textured. I incorporated abstract mark-making within the grass that creates very interesting areas to explore.
The poem “Wild”, by Becky Hemsley inspired this piece and title, the first in my Wildflowers Series. I created this piece for a Poetry-Inspired exhibition and read Becky’s poem at the opening. The first line is the title of this piece.
“You’re a wildflower, Darling. You cannot be tamed.”

This piece was one of the first three paintings that I exhibited. I spent a lot of time developing my personal style with this piece. I grew in confidence as I worked and reworked it.
The result is a symphony of textures, tools used, colors, melody & harmony of my developing identity as an artist.
I asked my friends on social media to help me name it.
Someone mentioned the word “rhubarb” and that caught my attention because my grandfather used to have a funny saying about rhubarb that became a great family memory.
My husband, who loves classical musical, suggested “rhapsody” to go along with “rhubarb”.
And Rhubarb Rhapsody was forever named.

This piece is the 3rd piece in my Joy Series.
I created this series to hang in a church’s lobby for a month-long exhibition.
My heart always wants my body to do back-flips when I feel incredible joy and elation. I wish I do real back-flips but this is my heart’s expression of these flips on canvas.

I don’t typically paint my emotions. I use painting to lose myself in textures and colors and tactile sensations. I use painting to regulate my nervous system by engaging physically in an activity that calms and settles me.
But, I was feeling so much sadness and hurt. So, I decided to see what would happen if I put that crushing on canvas. I didn’t create multiple layers. I didn’t work in sessions. I got the pain out and then walked away.
Weeks later, I went back and added the writing and white splatters because there was some healing and understanding that had come.
And it was finished.

This was never intended to be a painting of flowers. I rarely have an intention in mind when I begin a piece. With this piece I wanted to use a palette I don’t typically use and began playing with laying down the more muted colors and playing with movement. Circles started to develop and as I added dimension to them I realized they looked like flowers - so I started adding layers of green around them and their free-spirited selves came to life.

This piece is the anchor piece to my 3-part Joy Series. I created this series to hang in a church’s lobby for a month-long exhibition.
It contains layers of color which create depth and interest. The movement in this piece will spark joy.
When I’m elated I always wish I could do backflips. I had so much fun creating the movement in this piece. These are my backflips.

This brightly colored piece has a textured surface and lots of areas to explore and settle.
Winter is difficult for me. I long for the bright greens of Spring popping up and out and the energizing fuchsia of the redbuds. The hard times in life seem like they are going to last forever, just like long, hard Winters.
But, the Hope I cling to is that Spring Always Comes Back Around.

This piece has multiple layers of paint and collage to create a highly textured piece. It’s one of my very favorites. The colors, movement evoking play and jumping in piles of snow, scratching back to reveal lower layers, thick paper collage which creates visual depth. A lovely pop of fun and color.

This was such a fun little piece to create. Layers of dark mark-making and glazing, paper collage & netting, object stamping and stenciling, while building up color and wiping back.
It developed into a nod towards the growth that can happen while all seems dark.
The title is a nod to one of my favorite bands during high school.

I love these colors.
This piece started with thin layers of paint and dark flower shapes and then ready-for-recycling plastic product wrapping was used to stamp texture in various shades to create depth. The pops of salmon flowers are stepping up - because sometimes we need to STEP UP. And sometimes we need Stand Back. It takes discernment to know when to do which.
If you can decipher the asemic writing, you may know which next step to take in your own situation.
